Fimmvörðuháls hike

By far one of the most beautiful AND challenging hikes we’ve ever done.

A 16-mile hike with 4,000 feet of elevation gain that changes drastically in terrain/weather switching from gorgeous greenery and waterfalls to snow and ice back to green cliffs.

There are two options:

  • Skógar to Þórsmörk

  • Þórsmörk to Skógar

We did Skógar to Þórsmörk. For the first 7 miles, you will see 12+waterfalls that rival some of the most famous in Iceland. A bridge will then appear. At this point, you can choose to turn around and return. Should you

choose to continue, you will be rewarded with hiking between two glaciers for approximately 3-4 miles then a descent down green cliffs to your final destination. If you can, do the full 16 miles, it's worth it!

Transportation/Food

You will DEFINITELY want to book a bus ride from the end of the hike back to the Skogar Waterfall parking lot. There are many options available. We used Southcoast Adventure, and it was very easy. There are many times available for pickup. We chose 8:30 pm to make sure we didn’t have to rush our hike. Once you are picked up, it will be approximately a 1.5-hour ride back to the parking lot. https://www.southadventure.is/book-bus-to-thorsmork/

🍽️Veitingastadur Restaurant is located at the end of the hike near the bus stop. The food was average but did the trick because we were starving by the end of our trek.

Tips

Make sure that you pack for all possibilities. As stated above, the weather changes drastically:

  • Long underwear

  • Waterproof pants

  • Rain jacket

  • Crampons (if you think you might have difficulty hiking in the snow)

  • Hiking stick (if you are prone to tripping)

If you are up for the adventure, absolutely do it. It is completely worth it!
